What is a Subluxation?
Subluxation is a term used in the chiropractic field to describe what happens when a vertebrae in your spine moves out of its normal position. The word subluxation is derived from the Latin words meaning somewhat or slightly (sub) and to dislocate (luxate). When this happens, the misaligned vertebra creates pressure and stress on the spinal nerves, blood vessels, and surrounding muscles. This pressure and stress can cause an imbalance in the bodys normal processes as the nerves in the spinal column extend to the entire body and its organs. As time goes on and the uncorrected subluxation settles, the damage to the nerve gets progressively worse and different stages of subluxation degeneration set in. Or in lay terms what most people call "arthritis."
Subluxations can occur in a number of ways. A car accident, fall, sudden jar, or trauma are all examples of unique instances that may cause a subluxation. The other occurrences of a subluxation oftentimes come from everyday activities such as improper sleeping position, poor posture, or incorrect lifting habits.
Chiropractors are specialists in correcting subluxations and other misalignments in the spine and extremities. A chiropractor can restore the misaligned vertebrae to their proper position in the spinal column. They do this manually by using the chiropractic procedure known as a spinal adjustment. Your chiropractor, in most cases, will use his or her hands in applying corrective pressure to the spine in a specific direction and location. The manual force or thrust is gentle and helps restore the alignment and mobility of the vertebrae.
Dr. Floro offers various types of gentle chiropractic adjustments to suit each person's unique needs. Her chiropractic adjustments are painless and she treats infants , children, teens, adults and even the elderly. In some instances a patient may say they feel sore after a treatment which occurs from the muscles re-adjusting; which is similar to the temporary soreness one feels when they wear braces and have just had a correction made by their orthodontist- or if there has been a traumatic injury such as a car accident and a lot of inflammation already existed in the area being treated. In either case, the soreness can be remedied by having the patient apply ice for several days or longer periods if they had a more severe accidental injury.
